Neutropen feber och sjukhusvistelse

På akuten i Mount Holly.

Daniel fick feber i tisdags på eftermiddagen, så vi blev tvungna att skynda oss till akuten. När en neutropen person får feber är det allvarligt, och livshotande. Att vara neutropen innebär att man har ett onormalt lågt antal neutrofiler, som är den viktigaste typen av vita blodkroppar i ens blod. När man får cellgifter så påverkas även de vita blodkropparna, och nybildningen av dem försämras. De vita blodkropparna är ju kroppens främsta försvar mot bakterier och virus.
   Så, om man får feber när man är neutropen är det ett tecken på infektion och då måste man snabbt till sjukhus för att få antibiotika, eftersom det är allvarligt.

Vi hamnade på den lokala akuten, vars mottagande var under all kritik! Att som cancerpatient komma in till akuten, med neutropen feber, är både allvarligt och livshotande. Men damen vid registreringen sa bara att; "Du måste vänta, för det är två personer före dig."
   Och inte nog med det, de lät honom sitta i väntrummet tillsammans med alla andra sjuka patienter! De gav honom inte ens ett enskilt rum att vänta i. Så, i 30 minuter fick vi vänta innan de tog in honom, för att sedan vänta i 1 timme till innan de tog blodprover. Helt sanslöst, farligt, och olagligt att utsätta en neutropen person för detta.

Daniel blev inlagd på Virtua Memorial Hospital i Mount Holly i tisdags, och han kommer nog stanna där i några dagar. De försöker luska ut vilken sorts bakterieinfektion han har, och om den har spridit sig till katetern som de använder för att injicera cellgifter i intravenöst när han är inne på sjukhuset för behandling.

Jag ska snart bege mig till sjukhuset, efter att jag druckit mitt kaffe och värmt upp en soppa att ha med mig i en termos. Så får vi se hur den här dagen blir.

Neutropenic fever and hospital stay

Last tuesday afternoon, Daniel catched a fever. We had to rush to th ER. When a neutropenic person catches a fever, it is serious and life threatening.  To be neutropenic means that your neutrofill counts are very low. Neutrofills are the most important white blood cells in your blood. When you go through chemo, the white blood cells get affected too. They are your body's defence against bacteria and virus.

   So, if you catch a fever while you are neutropenic, it's a sign of infection, and you have to go to the hospital immediately to get antibiotics. It is a serious matter.

We got to the local ER, where the reception was totally beneath contempt! The lady in the register just said "You will have to wait, because there are two persons ahead of you."

   And as if that wasn't enough, they let him sit in the waitingroom among all the other sick patients! They didn't even bother to let him wait in a separate room.  We waited for 30 minutes before they brought him in, and after that we had to wait one more hour before they drew his blood. Totally insane, dangerous and life threatening to expose a neutropenic person to all this.

Daniel got admitted at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly last Tuesday. He will probably have to stay there for a couple of days. They are trying to find out what kind of infection he has. 

I'm off to the hospital in a minute, after I've finished my coffee, and heated up some soup to bring. So, we'll have to wait and see what this day is going to be like.
